New arrival shares on how to get accustomed to living in HK at the
¡§Holding Hands and Standing UP¡¨ programme closing ceremony

¡§Unpleasantness in life is always encountered¡¨ ¡V This was the case for Ah Ling, a new arrival in Hong Kong. She was unable to find a job and was also cheated by swindlers; however, she did not give up on herself and instead, turned these difficulties into positive motivation.

¡§When you fall from the top, it really hurts, but it doesn¡¦t matter, what¡¦s important is that, where you fall, that¡¦s where you pick yourself up again¡¨, Ah Ling shared as being the most profound lesson she learned upon coming to Hong Kong.

When Ah Ling was living in China, she worked as a department head in a textile company, enjoying a good career and even a private, chauffeured car.

Nonetheless, she decided to reunite with her husband in Hong Kong, a completely strange place for her, so she left her parents and gave up her career. Unfortunately, it was not easy for her to live in Hong Kong and she not only encountered difficulties in finding work, worst still, she was cheated by some conmen as soon as she arrived Hong Kong. And though her husband did not blame her, her own internal guilt increased.

Luckily, after joining our ¡§Holding Hands and Standing UP¡¨ programme, her life changed, opening a new chapter in her life.

In addition to understanding the skills of job seeking, she also realized the importance of being well equipped, so Ah Ling enrolled in sales and customer service, professional sales skills, and touch-screen sales systems tutor training courses. Throughout the study and internships, Ah Ling regained confidence and she is now working in our Social Enterprise Department as a full time employee in the charity outlet.

The ¡§Holding Hands and Standing UP¡¨ programme is funded by The Community Chest and is a 3-year programme aimed at helping new arrivals in the North District and Tai Po areas to integrate into our society. The programme includes a variety of training courses, such as sales and customer service, basic computer knowledge and Cantonese. There are also a series of workshops and parent-child activities, as well as numerous voluntary visits. About 30,000 people have benefited from the programme.

In attendance at the programme¡¦s closing ceremony were Mr. Tam Kin Keung, Member, North District Council; Mr. Kam Yuk Wai, Social Work Officer, Planning &Coordination, Tai Po & North, Social Welfare Department; Chung Wai-sze, Liaison Officer, Sheung Shui Town, North District Office, Home Affairs Department and Mr. Clarence Tsang, Assistant Director, Christian Action as our honorable guests. They also presented certificates to 50 students from the sales and customer service, professional sales and customer service (elderly care product), Mandarin and POS tutor training courses.
