The "World Refugee Celebration 2009" raises over HK$15,000

To celebrate the "620 World Refugee Day", our Chungking Mansions Service Centre, which is responsible for serving refugee and asylum seekers in HK, held the "World Refugee Celebration 2009" at St. Andrew's Church on 19 June.

In attendance were Jane Hugo, Resettlement Officer, United Nations; Brian Barbour, Director of Service Development, HK Refugee Advice Center; and Mr. Peter Barnes from Barnes & Daly Solicitors. They all introduced their services in HK and their respective histories of cooperation with CA.

We also invited various groups for some superb performances, including singing, poetry reading, dancing and a drum jam.

The event attracted 170 participants and raised over HK$15,000. All proceeds are used to assist those women and children who come to Hong Kong as victims of war, torture, rape and persecution.

Also, Miss Lisa Lee (Bottom photo), Manager of the Humanitarian Services Division, was invited by the Hong Kong Red Cross to attend a seminar titled "Walk Into the Refugee¡¦s World" on 21 June. She gave an analysis from differing humanitarian angles about the problems refugees face in Hong Kong.
