Qinghai orphan Xiao Shan has a memorable lunch with her "Mother"

Xiao Shan is a beautiful and blessed 3-year old deaf-mute child from our Xining Children’s Home in Qinghai. She came to Hong Kong in February and underwent 2 ear cochlear implant surgeries in March and May, and her rehabilitation is progressing positively. Later, she will go to Beijing to receive long-term speech therapy.

Xiao Shan has had the opportunity to meet some of the special people in her life prior to her departure from Hong Kong. Ms. Pamela Chan (Top photo - right) is one of the sponsors who supports Xiao Shan in our child sponsorship programme. She was extremely and pleasantly surprised that she was able to meet Xiao Shan in Hong Kong, 'I never thought I’d be able to meet one of my sponsored children in Hong Kong. Normally, we need to fly to wherever the child is living or just write to them, but here was a chance for me to meet Xiao Shan!'

Pamela works in the marketing department of a medicine manufacturer. In January of this year, a good friend of hers appealed to her to join Christian Action's child sponsorship scheme. Pamela was initially reluctant because, '‘I was already supporting 5 children in impoverished regions around the world and it might have been an overwhelming financial burden to support one more child, so it took me about a month to seriously consider whether I should join the programme or not.'

Ultimately, whenPamela became more aware of the physically and mentaly challenged children we care for, she felt like 'here are the ones who really need my support!' And when Pamela finally got to meet Xiao Shan, though Xiao Shan is unable to speak, her joy was evident on her smiling face when they were playing together. This encounter also changed Pamela's mindset. She said, 'It was truly moving and touching when I was able to feel her happiness and passion while playing with her. Now, I am thinking to participate more in doing volunteer work to either financially or physically support children and am seriously considering supporting an additional child!'

Fiona Ngao (Top photo -left), who is indirectly responsible for Pamela and Xiao Shan meeting, joined our child sponsorship programme at the beginning of this year and is currently sponsoring 3 children in Qinghai. She said,"When you see someone who is truly suffering, you will understand how blessed you are in your own life and you will start to share love and stop complaining so much. And it’s likely you will discover that the true meaning of life is to share what you have with others."This is the main reason she invites all of her friends to join Christian Action’s child sponsorship programme.

Blessedly, Xiao Shan also met her first donors, a family from Shatin who paid for her first cochlear and took her into their home to have an amazing lunch together.It was yet another memorable, happy occasion for Xiao Shan and the family.
