New Arrival Children's Programme |

Most
of the new arrival children have not learnt any English in the Mainland.
Their poor performance in English in their school may affect their self-esteem
and social life. In order to reduce their difficulties in learning English,
many schools in Hong Kong may request the new arrivals children to start
in a lower form. This phenomenon gives rise to communication gaps between
local and new arrival children. In addition, their families usually cannot
afford extra expenditures on the student's extra-curricular activities,
hence it is difficult for them to adapt to Hong Kong ways of life. |

Since 1996, Christian Action has provided a 60-hours Induction course followed by a 60-hours English Extension class to Mainland Chinese children between 6 -15 years of age who have been in Hong Kong for less than one year. The programme is funded by Education Department. More collaborative effort took place with schools such as School-based Projects & After-school Tutorial Classes conducted in 2000. The Induction Class offers new arrival children a thorough social adjustment programme to help them become familiar with vaious important aspects of Hong Kong life ranging from offering Basic English, Complex Chinese Characters and Cantonese, transport, public facilities to legal and political framework, and visiting community facilites and recreational day camps.
