There
has been a increasing number of new arrival families residing in Yuen Long,
Tai Po and the North Districts in the last few years. Over 80% of the students
in the rural primary schools are new arrivals, some of whom are also cross-border
students. The need for new arrival services in Tai Po, Yuen Long and North District
is obvious. |

To this end, Christian Action extends a helping hand in the New Territories by launching a pioneer outreach project - Rural Service Project for New Arrivals, with funding support by the CWM/Nethersole Fund. The project was launched since August 2000 to serve the needy new arrival families residing in the rundown village huts in North District and Yuen Long. Case management approach is adopted to conduct needs assessment, brief counseling, and networking of community service to resolve the difficulties encountered by the new arrivals. A series of visits, orientation talks, community tours, integration day, camps, social development groups and community sevice projects are also conducted regularly for the new arrival families. CWM/Nethersole, due to constraint of resources, has quitted subsidizes to this project. The project is subsidized by Christian Action since then through charity donation from the community. To facilitate delivery of these out-reach services and to provide a back-up work base, Christian Action opened its first service center in the New Territories, the new Sheung Shui Service Centre, which commenced full service in mid-March, 2001.
