In 1993 Christian Action detected changes in the Hong Kong economy. Manufacturers were moving to Mainland China in search of cheaper labour and low factory rents and Hong Kong's emphasis was moving towards service industries. More and more people were, and still are experiencing difficulties with finding work, especially factory workers who had been made redundant, and housewives who wished to re-enter the labour market. With the successful retraining and placement expertise gained from the Vietnamese project, we felt able to address local training needs. Christian Action is one of the first agencies to participate in the Employees Retraining Scheme under the auspices of the Employees Retraining Board. We provide general courses, skill courses and tailor-made courses to the jobless. In the past few years, HK seems to be under threat of the global financial crisis, resulting in the persistence of a still high unemployment rate. Our Employees Retraining Courses are in high demand by the jobless. We are now one of the largest training bodies in HK and have a turnover of more than 167,504 people since 1993. Last year, our placement rate was over 70% in our full-day courses.
