Sheung Shui Service Centre Opening Ceremony
(2 June 2001)

We are aware that more needy persons and new arrivals live in the north-eastern New Territories. In order to better support these groups, we have set up a new service centre in Sheung Shui, which began operating in March of this year and was officially opened on 2 June 2001. We were honoured to have Mrs. Carrie Lam, J.P., Director of Social Welfare Department as the Guest of Honour at our opening ceremony. Christian Action is using its resources and experience in the field to extend the spirit of service into the New Territories. We are grateful for the funding by CWM / Nethersole Fund, the Quality Education Fund and the Social Welfare Department. Also for the generous support by Home Affairs and Housing Departments and other government bodies and organisations that have made the set-up of the new centre possible.

We have responded to the increasing needs of the elderly population by setting up the first specialized training course on care of the elderly, in collaboration with the Employees Retraining Board and the Senior Citizen Home Safety Association. The course provides participants with skills in installing the system and maintenance as well as communication with and care of the elderly. Students who graduate and pass an interview can be working within three months of commencing the course, providing maintenance and repairs for elderly people or the chronically ill living at home. A graduation ceremony was held and officiated by Mr. Tam Yiu Chung, J.P., Chariman of the Employees Retraining Board and the Elderly Commission's Central Co-ordinating Committee
