Serving Domestic Helpers
The ProblemHong Kong has 406,571 Domestic Helpers and historically they were mainly Filipino. They had a well organized labour-dispute network and spoke fluent English. Today, however, most domestic helpers are Indonesians with limited schooling and language skills. They are frequently exploited by employment agency and when they are abused by their employers, they are less aware of their rights, to defend themselves to survive in Hong Kong society. Sadly, they are not alone: Nepalese, Sri Lankan, Indian and Thai domestic helpers often suffer the same fate in Hong Kong. A New StartChristian Action is passionate about seeing justice done to save domestic helpers from abusive employers. We have established two safe houses where helpers can live and recuperate while their legal case is being considered. Our paralegals explain the workers' legal rights, assist with legal proceedings, liaise with the police throughout their investigation, and help them prepare for their tribunal hearings.

Christian Action also runs a domestic helpers training centre with classes in computer, English and financial literacy. Other vocational classes are also developed to address their needs and aspirations.
