Dollar for dollar reaps joy!

Two years ago, Mrs Chan, a single mother who is among the poorest in Hong Kong, told us “I am worried about my son. I don’t earn enough to send him to university and I really want him to have better opportunities than I had.”

We were about to embark on our Child Development Fund to help poor young people in HK develop their personal interests outside school boundaries, so Mrs. Chan’s son, Cho Hing, was among our first intake of youth.

Renewal

Jenny was a cross-border wife until her husband left her and her daughter when Jenny was 8-months pregnant with their second child. She was living in China but her household registration there had been cancelled because she just received her Hong Kong ID card. Meanwhile, she had no money but was not eligible for welfare in Hong Kong.

The Sojourner

Rita Gurung is 34 and came to Hong Kong in 2004 as a domestic helper. On August 18, 2007 she was hit by a van. Both her legs were badly injured and steel plates had to be inserted in both legs. She spent 25 days in hospital and lost her job. She is now a disabled person who cannot walk without a stick.

Modern Day Slavery

Christian Action successfully helped 26 year old Faridha, an Indonesian foreign domestic helper, who had been assaulted by her employer.  After hearing the case the judge awarded her HK$ 616,000 plus the costs of the proceedings.
