Serving Refugees
A Refugee Child's LotHaving escaped the political turmoil and violence of Somalia, 11 year old Mohammed and his mother made it as far as Hong Kong, hoping to one day be accepted as refugees in a third country. For now they live in limbo – unable to return to Somalia and unwelcome anywhere else. As a refugee in Hong Kong Mohammed found he was unable to attend school – He and his mother came to Christian Action for help. Across the world, millions of refugees have suffered persecution, torture and sexual violence in their home countries. Across the world, millions of refugees have suffered persecution, torture and sexual violence in their home countries. Yet rather than being greeted with understanding and love when they escape, refugees frequently endure prejudice, rejection and suspicion. Christian Action welcomes them with open arms and assists refugees and asylum seekers on the journey towards a new life and better future. Christian Action believes that all people are equal in God’s sight regardless of their ethnicity or nationality. We believe that we are called to love and serve the refugees who make it to Hong Kong and help them recover from the horrors they have endured. A Unique ServiceChristian Action runs one of the only comprehensive service centers for refugees and asylum seekers in Hong Kong. To date, we have registered over 3,000 refugees and asylum seekers, and 30-50 new clients approach us each month. Drawing from over 50 years of experience serving refugees and a trusted, collaborative relationship with well recognized partner agencies such as the UNHCR and the Hong Kong Refugee Advice Centre, we are in a unique position to provide Hong Kong’s refugees with a holistic program of care and development. The program is made possible with the help of hundreds of donors and volunteers who generously give of their time and expertise. Christian Action's Refugee Program assists refugees with essential humanitarian needs such as food, clothing, shelter and toiletries. We are also one of the only sources for educational, recreational and psychosocial support. |
Our staff are opening doors for children to attend school and for adults to learn new skills and use their time in a productive way. Each week our dedicated volunteers offer between 12-15 classes/sessions in areas such as English, Cantonese, Computer Training, Youth Development, Football and Women's Empowerment. But the challenges refugees and asylum seekers face often involve more than the basic essentials. Minimal aid for housing and food is provided by the government through ISS. This is why we also provide refugees and asylum seekers with professional advice and assistance given by case workers as well as counselors.
Mohammed, who came to us as a traumatised child, has flourished in secondary school. He longs for his home and friends, so he wants to become a lawyer, return home and contribute to finding solutions to the ongoing crises in his country. Help the forgotten ones"We believe that every refugee and asylum seeker should be treated as if we were greeting Joseph, Mary and their son Jesus as they sought refuge in Egypt, having barely escaped death so long ago. Your gift of HK$250 per month will help us provide basic necessities, counseling, workshops, medical and para-legal advice to ensure refugees are respected, protected and provided with a significant opportunity for a safe and fruitful life in the days ahead. Thank you for helping us to care for these forgotten ones!"
