Job Fair
for Ethnic
Minorities
With the support of the
Labour Department, Christian
Action organized a Job
Fair for ethnic minorities
on 4th October 2007 at
Henry Leong Yaumatei
Community Centre. This
is the second year we held
this job fair, and we hope
to provide the better educated
and more motivated ethnic
minorities a convenient
occasion to seek jobs.
We have received full support
from the Vocational Training
Council and the Constitutional
and Mainland Affairs Bureau.
Mr. Byron Ng, Assistant
Commissioner (Employment
Services) of the Labour
Department officiated at
the opening ceremony.
24 employers had offered
over 400 job vacancies
for non-Chinese job seekers.
Most of the jobs are in
the catering, security
and property management,
logistics and hotel industries.
Over 200 ethnic minorities
joined the Job Fair, some
of them were employed on
the spot.
Mrs.
Cheung Ang Siew Mei,
Executive
Director of Christian Action
encouraged the ethnic minority
job seekers to equip themselves
with the necessary skills
and always embrace a positive
attitude to seeking jobs,
"Due to differences in
race and culture as well
as not having the recognized
qualifications, employment
difficulties are common
among all the new arrivals
and ethnic minorities in
the society. Ethnic minorities
are marginalized and rejected
by many employers and the
main stream society. However,
the Employees Retraining
Board has already launched
training courses in different
industries with English
as the teaching medium,
in order to enhance the
competitiveness of the
ethnic minorities. I encourage
you to equip yourself with
new job skills and to put
more efforts to learn Chinese,
thus to improve your employability."
