Know More Domestic Migrant Helpers' Rights

At the end of June 2007, the Domestic Helpers and Migrant Workers Programme (DMW) conducted a 'Train the Trainer' session on the Sexual Discrimination Ordinance (SDO). The training was sponsored by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) in pursuit of its aim to raise awareness about sexual discrimination and harassment in the workplace. The training was conducted by Myriam Bartu and attended by an array of NGOs, such as Helpers for Domestic Helpers, Mission for Migrant Workers and Asian Migrant Centre. These organizations have offered assistance to migrant domestic workers (MDW) and other ethnic minorities.

At the beginning of July 2007, DMW was invited to conduct a paralegal workshop for migrant worker leaders under the Coalition of Migrant Rights. In this session, we discussed worker rights under the Employment Ordinance (EO), how to translate the rights into financial terms and how to access legal remedy in HK.

During the same month, DMW was also invited to attend the Global Community Forum on Migration, Development and Human Rights in Brussels, Belgium. The forum was organized by Migrants Rights International (MRI), the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants (PICUM), the Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA), and the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (NNIRR). This forum provided NGOs, which work on migration and domestic worker issues, an opportunity to come together and share their ideas on how to improve the situation of migrant workers all over the world.

Reverend Hosea Sudarna from Gereja Kristen Jawa (Javanese Christian Church) visited at the end of August to document a one-month observation period for the ministry of Indonesian Migrant Workers. We accompanied Reverend Hosea to the Labour Department, Labour Tribunal, shelters and to Victoria Park so that he could understand the problems encountered by the migrant domestic workers (MDW) firsthand. During his stay, Reverend Hosea also conducted workshops for our shelter residents. When he returned to Indonesia, he made recommendations on what policies need to be applied to assist Indonesian migrant workers in Hong Kong.
