| "Holding
Hands & Standing Up" - Mutual Supportive Network for New Arrivals
to Hong Kong
Background
New
arrival families in North District are confronting severe economic difficulties;
statistics from Census and Statistics Department of Hong Kong Government
reveal that, median monthly domestic household income of Hong Kong is
HK$15,800, but that of new arrival families is HK$6,500. Therefore,
a lot of new arrivals, mainly women, have to work apart from taking
care of their children. But factors like low education, lack of vocational
skills and supportive network, suburban residence and gender discrimination
defeat their job seeking efforts. At best they can only get a low-paid
job with long working hours, and face being marginalized in the labour
market.
